The Dynasty Digest: April 4, 2025

Chris breaks down all the of top performers from MLB and AAA from Thursday, April 3.

Happy MiLB Opening Day! At least on for Double-A and below! We are a week into Triple-A action, but tonight, we get all minor league levels in action. I will be covering the Greenville-Bowling Green series this weekend, where Juan Valera will be on the bump on Saturday, making his much-anticipated High-A debut.

But as I wait anxiously for first pitch at 6:45 est, let’s talk about the happenings from across MLB and AAA. If you are unfamiliar with the Dynasty Digest, it is a daily newsletter covering the previous days’ action. While the main focus is usually Minor League Baseball, I will also be hitting on MLB performances to know as well.

Let’s break them down!

The Dynasty Digest, April 4, 2025

Cedric Mullins, OF, Baltimore Orioles

Mullins continues to swing a hot bat, blasting his third home run in his first thirty plate appearances and stealing his second base of the year. The home run left the bat with a 108.4 mph exit velocity and was a line shot down the right field line that got out in a hurry.

Don’t be shocked when Mullins hits 25 or more home runs and steals 30 bases. I predicted it this offseason, saying:

It has been three full seasons since Mullins incredible 30 home run/30 stolen base season in 2021. The results the last few seasons have certainly not matched that, but is Mullins really that much different of a player now than he was then? People are down on Mullins, but for fantasy purposes, this is still a very valuable player.

Quad injuries have limited Mullins the last two seasons, but in 2024, he still reached 499 plate appearances. In that sample, he slashed .234/.305/.405 with 18 home runs and 32 stolen bases. Mullins did struggle mightily against left-handed pitching, which means he will likely be on the strong-side of a platoon, but he could still be really good.

Mullins has strong contact skills, having career-best zone-contact and contact rates in 2024. He gets aggressive on pitches in the heart of the zone, and it pays off. While the exit velocities are not great, Mullins still can get to home run power thanks to pulling 49 percent of his fly balls and having a 93 mph average exit velocity on those batted ball types.

A .250 batting average with 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases would not shock me in 2025 from Mullins.

J.T. Ginn, RHP, Athletics, AAA

Ginn dominated on Triple-A Opening Day last week and did it again on Thursday. After five scoreless with eight strikeouts last week, Ginn struck out 11 batters across six innings on Thursday while having 15 whiffs. He did allow one walk and two earned runs, but pitched exceptionally well.

Ginn is a sinker-heavy pitcher, and after averaging 95 mph last time out, he sat 93-94 on Thursday but still generated a 30 percent whiff rate on the sinker. Ginn does a good job of keeping the ball on the ground with this sinker.

Ginn’s mid-80s slider was dominant again. After posting a 67 percent whiff rate last week, he generated eight whiffs on nine swings last night and had a 63 percent CSW. A zone contact rate of 20 percent is insanely impressive. The pitch has good depth and a strong gyro shape.

Ginn did make his MLB debut last year, posting a 4.24 ERA across 34 innings while striking out 29 batters. Right now, Ginn looks like he could be the third-best arm in the Athletics rotation.
