Starting Pitcher Streamers 4/15-4/21

Michael Simione breaks down all the pitching streamers that you need to know for this weeks slate of games.

Good morning! I hope you all are having a wonderful weekend. Mine has been pretty great as I bought a new Lego set to build like the nerd that I am. But we are all nerds, right? I mean we all know underlying baseball statistics like a bunch of weirdos. Us nerds are actually the cool kids.

Moving on…

So Cody Bradford is looking pretty dang good. In his start against the A’s (I know it is the A’s) he had 17 whiffs with seven coming from his four-seam. In three starts he boasts a 1.40 ERA and .062 WHIP. Is he a league winner? I wouldn’t say that. His 23.9 K% is decent but not great, his SIERA calls for a 3.63 ERA, and his SwStr% is just 11.2%. He reminds me of Marcus Stroman in terms of numbers. He is a hold but if someone in your league absolutely loves him and you can get a good deal I would pull the trigger.

MacKenzie Gore had a wildly successful start against the Athletics. As we know his fastball velocity is up and has been a lot more successful than last season. Against the A’s he had 20 whiffs with 12 of them coming from his four-seam. I think Gore will have some really good starts and some not-so-great ones. It has to do with his command. When he can elevate the fastball he is great but even in a game like yesterday the plot still kind of worries me.

Here are our results from last week:

4/8 Spencer Turnbull: 6.0 IP - 2 H - 0 ER - 1 BB - 6 K

4/9 Martin Perez: 8.0 IP - 6 H - 1 ER - 0 BB - 7 K

4/10 Zack Littell: 4.1 IP - 6 H - 1 ER - 3 BB - 4 K

4/11 Jon Gray: 5.0 IP - 3 H - 1 ER - 1 BB - 9 K

4/12 Paul Blackburn: 6.1 IP - 5 H - 0 ER - 2 BB - 4 K

4/13 MacKenzie Gore: 5.0 IP - 4 H - 0 ER - 1 BB - 11K

4/14 Javier Assad: TBD

Season Total: 94.1 IP - 71 H - 12 ER - 29 BB - 97 K - 1.14 ERA - 1.06 WHIP - 9.25 K/9

The Chart

The amazing, fantastic, beautiful streamer chart is back! Unfortunately, Substack won’t let you just post a table here. Dumb. So again the format is now going to shift slightly. It is very difficult to post it as a picture in here and it look appealing. So for now we are going to drop a link in here so you can look through the days.

Monday 4/15

Streamer of the Day

No one is really popping out at me for Monday. It’s honestly how it usually goes for a Monday so we are going to play matchups. Our best option is Seth Lugo who takes on a White Sox offense that just lost Moncada and Robert.

Strikeout Upside

Luis Gil, Ben Brown, and Patrick Sandoval.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Seth Lugo and Luis Gil.

Win/QS Potential

Seth Lugo and Ross Stripling.

If I Had to Rank The Top Five

  1. Seth Lugo

  2. Luis Gil

  3. Ross Stripling

  4. Patrick Sandoval

  5. Ben Brown

Tuesday 4/16

Streamer of the Day

Jon Gray gets another solid matchup in Detroit. While his Stuff+ ranking is lacking he has been locating the ball well. Detroit is a good park for a pitch like Gray and they also have been struggling vs RHP to start the season.

Strikeout Upside

Jon Gray, Casey Mize, and JP Sears.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Jon Gray, Jose Quintana, and Wade Miley.

Win/QS Potential

Jon Gray and Ryan Yarbrough.

If I Had to Rank The Top Five

  1. Jon Gray

  2. JP Sears

  3. Casey Mize

  4. Chris Paddack

  5. Jose Quintana

Wednesday 4/17

Streamer of the Day

Tyler Wells takes on the Twins and while that matchup sounds a little scary it actually isn’t. The Twins have a meager 75 wRC+ in the last seven days as well as an extremely low line drive rate. As for Wells, he has a 100 Pitching+ on the season with a decent 12.0 SwStr%. I changed my mind, I am going with Steven Matz against the Athletics because duh.

Strikeout Upside

Steven Matz, Tyler Wells, and Trevor Rogers.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Steven Matz and Tyler Wells.

Win/QS Potential

Steven Matz, Dane Dunning, and Tyler Wells.

If I Had to Rank The Top Five

  1. Steven Matz

  2. Tyler Wells

  3. Trevor Rogers

  4. Jordan Wicks

  5. Dane Dunning

Thursday 4/18

Streamer of the Day

Not a lot of options for Thursday. I would honestly not stream if I had the option. Otherwise, I would settle for Andrew Heaney against the Tigers. The Tigers have a 59 wRC+ against LHP so far this season. Plus we all know Heaney tends to have those starts where he dominates.

Strikeout Upside

Andrew Heaney and Griffin Canning.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Andrew Heaney and Carlos Carrasco.

Win/QS Potential

Andrew Heaney and Ryne Nelson.

If I Had to Rank The Top Five

  1. Andrew Heaney

  2. Carlos Carrasco

  3. Jameson Taillon

  4. Griffin Canning

  5. Ryne Nelson

Friday 4/19

Streamer of the Day

I was really impressed with Clarke Schmidt and his last start. On the season he has a very impressive 113 Stuff+ as well as a 12.7 SwStr% the last 14 days. He takes on the Rays who have been an average offense so far this season.

Strikeout Upside

Clarke Schmidt, Gavin Stone, and Alec Marsh.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Clarke Schmidt and Alec Marsh.

Win/QS Potential

Clarke Schmidt and Emerson Hancock.

If I Had to Rank The Top Five

  1. Clarke Schmidt

  2. Alec Marsh

  3. Gavin Stone

  4. Tyler Anderson

  5. Joe Boyle

Saturday 4/20

Streamer of the Day

I love to pick on Oakland and it’s because they have possibly one of the worst offenses we have seen in a while. In the last seven days, they have a torrid 15.1 SwStr% and 78.0 zone contact percentage as an offense. I’ll take Logan Allen against them all day.

Strikeout Upside

Logan Allen and Javier Assad.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Logan Allen, Miles Mikolas, and Javier Assad.

Win/QS Potential

Logan Allen, Javier Assad, Miles Mikolas, and Colin Rea.

If I Had to Rank The Top Five

  1. Logan Allen

  2. Javier Assad

  3. Miles Mikolas

  4. Colin Rea

  5. Reese Olson

Sunday 4/21

Streamer of the Day

It’s hard not to go with Luis Gil's skill set but I will lean Louie Varland for this start. He takes on the Tigers and has a decent split advantage against them. The Tigers continue to be a not-so-great offense and Varland does have a 101 Stuff+ on the season.

Strikeout Upside

Louie Varland, Luis Gil, Jose Soriano, and Casey Mize.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Louie Varland, Luis Gil, and Martin Perez.

Win/QS Potential

Louie Varland, Luis Gil, and Martin Perez.

If I Had to Rank The Top Five

  1. Louie Varland

  2. Luis Gil

  3. Casey Mize

  4. Martin Perez

  5. Jose Soriano
