Starting Pitcher Streamers 4/1-4/7

Michael Simione breaks down all the pitching streamers that you need to know for this weeks slate of games.

There is nothing like sipping some coffee on a Monday morning with messy hair knowing there is a full week of baseball ahead. But to look ahead it’s always good to reflect on the past. So reflect we shall!

It’s always good to keep tabs on every player right? Of course it is! Not everyone has time for that though because you know…life. So every week I can help! Justin Shane Bieber had a beast of an outing with six shutout innings and 11 strikeouts. It was against the A’s, sure, but the 18 whiffs and 37% CSW rate are fantastic. His four-seam was up a tick from last season and he added more horizontal break on the cutter. The cutter had a 91% whiff rate. Wow. Deception is a hell of a drug. Let’s see what he does next.

While I was at a party surrounded by 20 screaming children I was able to watch 90% of Jared Jones start. Besides the occasional hitter where he looked a little lost, he was mostly a beast in his debut. The four-seam averaged 97 MPH which I saw him hitting regularly, the slider and four-seam were both whiff machines, and his overall 40% CSW rate is quite impressive. I’m definitely buying where I can.

Here are our results from the first weekend:

3/28 Frankie Montas: 6.0 IP - 4 H - 0 ER - 0 BB - 4 K

3/29 A.J. Puk: 2.0 IP - 3 H - 4 ER - 6 BB - 1 K

3/30 Zack Littell: 6.0 IP - 4 H - 0 ER - 2 BB - 6 K

3/31 Jack Flaherty: 6.0 IP - 4 H - 1 ER - 0 BB - 7 K

Total: 20 IP - 15 H - 5 ER - 8 BB - 18 K - 3.00 ERA - 1.15 WHIP

Your boy has been preaching about Luis Gil all off-season but I cannot roll with him in Arizona. Today I will be going with a little upside in a juicy matchup. Tanner Houck will take on the Oakland Athletics. Oakland has the 6th highest K% of the year already and I expect that to keep rising.

Strikeout Upside

Tanner Houck, Luis Gil, and Sean Manaea.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Tanner Houck and Max Meyer if he is somehow available.

Win/QS Potential

Tanner Houck and Dean Kremer

If I Had to Rank The Top Five

  1. Tanner Houck

  3. Sean Manaea

  4. Luis Gil

Streamer of the Day

There are a couple of options I like for today and since we don’t have a lot of actionable information to go off of I am going to go with a safer option. The Rockies have been terrible to start the season and their team 56 wRC+ shows it. Which makes my streamer pick Javier Assad.

Strikeout Upside

Javier Assad, Chris Paddack if he is out there, Graham Ashcraft, and Casey Mize.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Javier Assad and Casey Mize.

Win/QS Potential

Javier Assad, Reynaldo Lopez, and Tyler Anderson.

If I Had to Rank The Top Five

I am not giving up on A.J. Puk. He looked disastrous in his first start with zero control. He was even throwing over the catcher’s head. But Puk typically has good control so I think there might have been some opening day jitters. Additionally, his opponent the Angels have been torrid so far this season with a .247 wOBA (3rd worst in the league).

Strikeout Upside

A.J. Puk and Frankie Montas.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

A.J. Puk and Drew Smyly.

Win/QS Potential

A.J. Puk, Jose Quintana, and Drew Smyly.

  4. Kyle Harrison

Streamer of the Day

Only five options for the day and all of them are a bit meh. Seth Lugo had a decent 2023 season his only crutch is that he doesn’t provide a ton of strikeouts. His matchup is against the lowly White Sox so perhaps he can rack up a few strikeouts here.

Strikeout Upside

Seth Lugo.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Seth Lugo, Martin Perez, and Michael Soroka.

Win/QS Potential

Seth Lugo and Martin Perez.

If I Had to Rank The Top Five

  4. Ryan Weathers

Brady Singer looked like the Brady Singer of old in his first start of the season. He had 19 whiffs against a good offense in the Twins. He didn’t feature his new sweeper that much but it might be because he didn’t need to. He takes on the White Sox who we all know are going to be a bottom-tier offense this season.

Strikeout Upside

Brady Singer, Jordan Hicks and Kenta Maeda.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Brady Singer and Kenta Maeda.

Win/QS Potential

Brady Singer, Zack Littell, and Kenta Maeda

If I Had to Rank The Top Five

  5. Erick Fedde

Saturday 4/6

Streamer of the Day

I am going to go with Garrett Whitlock here because of the matchup against the Angels. I do want to say though, I know he had a ton of strikeouts in his first start but his whiff rate was extremely low. I am not fully buying into him yet and I would like to see two more starts out of him. Of course, he is an add and hold for now but I am just saying he could be just a streamer.

Strikeout Upside

Garrett Whitlock, Clarke Schmidt, and Trevor Rogers.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Garrett Whitlock, Steven Matz, and Ranger Suarez.

Win/QS Potential

Garrett Whitlock, Ranger Suarez, and Michael Wacha.

If I Had to Rank The Top Five

  1. Garrett Whitlock

  2. Ranger Suarez

  3. Steven Matz

  4. Clarke Schmidt

Reese Olson showed flashes last season and this will be his second start of the week. He takes on the Athletics offense and brings a sense of strikeout upside. He has to perform to hold his rotation spot over Matt Manning so I bet he performs well early on in the season. Let’s see that beautiful slider of yours all day Olson.

Strikeout Upside

Reese Olson, Tanner Houck, and Alec Marsh.

Ratio Play (High Floor)

Reese Olson, Luis Gil, and Alec Marsh.

Win/QS Potential

Reese Olson, Tanner Houck, Max Meyer, and Alec Marsh.
