Minor League Baseball Weekend Recap (Week 3)
Chris recaps the stars and standouts from this weekend of Minor League Baseball. Read on the future stars of the game.
At the beginning of each week, I will provide a comprehensive breakdown of everything that happened across the landscape of Minor League Baseball. It might be a little overkill as I wrote far too much on the players that stood out on the weekend, but I hope it helps you better understand why a player performed as they did.
This report, each Monday, will feature the top 20 standouts beyond just the box score. I will dive into non-public pitch data and hitters’ statcast data as well. The goal is to help you find prospects that are breaking out early that you should be getting in on in your dynasty leagues.
Minor League Baseball Weekend Recap(Week 3)
Blake Burkhalter, RHP, Atlanta Braves, 24, AA
After a dominant eight-strikeout performance on Tuesday, Burkhalter looked the part again on Sunday against the same Pensacola team. Burkhalter tossed five innings and struck out nine batters while allowing just four hits and one run. His 18 whiffs led all arms Double-A and below on Sunday and followed up a 19-whiff outing on Tuesday.
Having an impressive season after injury in 2024, Burkhalter posted a 2.71 ERA across 69.2 innings with a 3.08 FIP to back it up. He looks highly impressive so far in 2025, boasting a 1.62 ERA to go along with a 30 percent strikeout rate and a 7.5 percent walk rate. Burkhalter has a 33.3 percent CSW and a swinging strike rate of 17.6 percent.
After being selected in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Auburn, Burkhalter pitched just 4.2 innings before blowing his arm out and needing Tommy John surgery. A dominant closer at Auburn, the Braves are developing Burkhalter as a starter now that he is back healthy.
Burkhalter has a heavy cutter profile, sitting in the upper 80s and touching 92 at times. The cutter sometimes morphed into the slider with more sweeping action when it sat at the lower side of its velocity band.
The fastball sat in the 93-96 range but can touch 98 mph at times. It has good carry and plays best at the top of the zone. Burkhalter also throws a changeup in the low-to-mid 80s with good arm-side fade.
Brady House, 3B, Washington Nationals, 21, AAA
House blasted two home runs on the way to a four-hit day on Saturday and had singles on Friday and Sunday. This capped off an impressive series against Worcester in which House reached base in all six games.
Sometimes, it feels like House has been around forever, so it is somewhat humbling to remember he just turned 21 last June. His 2024 season was like much of his career, as we saw highs and lows. The good news is, for the first time in his career, Hosue stayed healthy and played 129 games.
So far in 2025, House has gotten results. His .296 batting average is backed by an 80 percent in-zone contact rate and a 48 percent hard-hit rate. Ground balls are still a bit of an issue, but House has shown improvements in sweet-spot rate, meaning he is hitting the ball at ideal launch angles more often.
House has always hit the ball hard, so it is not a surprise to see the impressive hard-hit rate, but his 109 mph 90th percentile exit velocity and 91 mph average exit velocity stand out. The approach has been cleaned up a bit and while the 34 percent chase rate is still a bit higher than I’d like to see, its’s an improvement by around six percentage points from 2024.
House still has talent, and if he can show just an average approach and contact skills, there are 30 home runs in the bat with a solid glove at third base.
