Relief Pitcher Breakouts

Orion Kerkering, PHI, 23, 6’2”/204

Kerkering has been a long-time favorite of mine, dating back to his minor league days. He spent 2024 in the majors, where he threw 63 innings, having a 2.29 ERA and a 29 percent strikeout rate.

Leading with a sweeper, Kerkering averages between 16 and 17 inches of horizontal movement and misses bats at a high clip. His 98 mph four-seam also has solid traits and posted a 28 percent whiff rate last year.

Kerkering commands his pitches well, and limits his walk. The team brought in Jordan Romano to close, but I would not be shocked if Kerkering was good enough to take the closer role in time.

Jeff Hoffman, TOR, 32, 6’5”/235

Hoffman was a hot commodity on the market this offseason, but reports surfaced that both Baltimore and Atlanta backed out of potential contract offers due to concerning medicals. The Blue Jays landed him for a solid 3-year/$33 million deal.

Coming off a season in which Hoffman posted a 2.17 ERA across 66.1 innings and struck out 34 percent of batters, he looks poised to take another step forward. Health permitting, Hoffman could find himself among the top-ranked closers.

Between his slider, four-seam, and splitter, all having a 30 percent whiff rate at minimum, Hoffman can attack hitters in several ways. The slider had a 45 percent whiff rate, which is elite.

Jose Ferrer, WSH, 25, 6’1”/233

Ferrer got a a taste of the majors and struggled in 2023, but came into 2024 a different arm. After missing the first half of the season with a teres major strain in his shoulder, Ferrer posted a 3.38 ERA with a 2.76 FIP in 32 innings.

While he did only strike out 19.4 percent of hitters, there is room for growth. Using his sinker 60 percent of the time, Ferrer posted a 57 percent ground ball rate, but misses bats with his changeup and four-seam and occasional slider. Sitting 98 mph on his fastball with an 88 mph changeup that mimics the sinker, Ferrer sets himself up nicely from the left side.

Said to be in the mix for saves in 2025, Ferrer could take a step forward and lock down a role in the ninth inning if he chooses to lessen the four-seam usage, which he does to miss bats. He is a nice deep-league target.
